This is
our newest cat
Gris-Gris
Pantoufle

We got her at the Calumet
Area Humane Society.
She
is a very loud !

Gris Gris came
home September 26, 2002.
She spent some
time alone checking out the litter box and it's surrounds, then the rest of the
house. She then met the other cat and two dogs. Dogs were excited to
meet her, she was not thrilled. Pyewackett was not pleased and hid out
most of the night.
Gris Gris slept in
our bed and was quite at home. She sure likes attacking fingers and
toes! The following morning she is feeling much more at home and not
minding the dogs as much. Pyewackett is warming up ever so slightly... but
she definitely is not in love with the new kitten LOL.
I think things
will turn out quite all right in a few days :)

I'm Only a Cat
I'm only a cat,
and I stay in my place...
Up there on your chair,
on your bed or your face!
I'm only a cat,
and I don't finick much...
I'm happy with cream
and anchovies and such!
I'm only a cat,
and we'll get along fine...
As long as you know
I'm not yours... you're all mine!

The History behind the
name
Literally translated
Gris-gris (pronounced "gree-gree") comes from the French word gris
which means grey. A combination of black (negative) and white (positive)
magic... Gris-gris was the most powerful of all charms and also the most
expensive. Gris-gris was a potion of herbs and natural or decaying matter, from
the mundane to the bizarre, sometimes including powdered brick, ochre, cayenne
pepper, fingernail clippings, human hair, and animal skin (usually reptilian) --
all tossed into a small leather bag. Thankfully, this mixture was not ingested,
but was worn around the neck from a string, or left near the intended object of
the charm. It supposedly brought either good or bad luck, depending on what you
believed in. The real power of the gris-gris lay in the psychology of the object
of the charm. The power of suggestion, more than anything else, was the real
power behind the gris-gris. Gris-gris lives on today in popular culture.
Even nowadays in the New Orleans area, it is not uncommon to hear the expression
"to put gris-gris on it," meaning to perform some task so
astonishingly well it seems as if magic is being used.
Pantoufle means slipper in
French.

St. Jerome's Cat
St. Jerome in his study kept a great big cat,
it's always in his pictures, with its feet upon the mat.
Did he give it milk to drink, in a little dish?
When it came to Friday's, did he give it fish?
If I lost my little cat, I'd be sad without it;
I should ask St. Jerome what to do about it.
I should ask St. Jerome, just because of that,
for he's the only saint I know who kept a kitty cat.

Cats are Wonderful Friends
Gentle eyes that see so much,
paws that have the quiet touch,
Purrs to signal "all is well"
and show more love than words could tell.
Graceful movements touched with pride,
a calming presence by our side
A friendship that takes time to grow
Small wonder why we love them so.
